    This paper presents some details from an observational evaluation of a computer assisted detection tool in mammography. The use of the tool, its strengths and weaknesses, are documented and its impact on reader's 'professional vision' (Goodwin 1994) considered. The paper suggests issues for the design, use and, importantly, evaluation of new technologies in everyday medical work, pointing to general issues concerning trust – users’ perception of the dependability of the evidence generated by such tools and suggesting that evaluations require an emphasis on the complex issue of what technologies afford their users in everyday work

    ATHENE : Assistive technologies for healthy living in elders : needs assessment by ethnography

    Numerous assistive technologies to support independent living –including personal alarms, mobile phones, self-monitoring devices, mobility aids, software apps and home adaptations –have been developed over the years, but their uptake by older people, especially those from minority ethnic groups, is poor. This paper outlines the ways in which the ATHENE project seeks to redress this situation by producing a richer understanding of the complex and diverse living experiences and care needs of older people and exploring how industry, the NHS, social services and third sector can work with the older people themselves to ‘co-produce’ useful and useable ALT designs to meet their needs. In this paper, we provide an overview of the project methodology and discuss some of the issues it raises for the design and development process

    The state of practice in model-driven engineering

    Despite lively debate over the last decade on the benefits or drawbacks of model-driven engineering (MDE), there have been very few industry-wide studies of MDE in practice. We present a new study, covering a broad range of experiences and ways of applying MDE: we surveyed 450 MDE practitioners and carried out in-depth interviews with 22 more. Findings suggest that MDE may be more widespread than commonly believed, but developers rarely use it to generate whole systems; rather, they apply it to develop key parts of a system often using domain-specific modeling languages developed specifically for the purpose. Our findings also suggest reasons why some efforts to adopt MDE fail and some succeed. As is usually the case in software engineering, adoption largely depends on social and organizational factors, some of which we describe in this paper

    This report presents the findings of this investigation by reporting on the main activities that have been undertaken and presenting our informed final recommendation on a follow-on project activity. It is structured in the following way. Section 2 explains the obstacles encountered while trying to understand the term "open source", contacts pursued and projects observed with respect to open source. Section 3 presents insights into the sociology of open source software development, whereas section 4 describes observations drawn and main issues identified for open source software development and dependable systems engineering. Finally, section 5 explains our recommendation together with the reasons behind our decision.     The ATHENE project:the importance of bricolage in personalising assisted living technologies

    Introduction: An aging population is fueling interest in assisted living technologies (ALTs) to support independence at home. Numerous ALTs have been developed and deployed, but uptake and use has fallen short of levels predicted by policymakers. A key reason is a lack of understanding of users’ needs. In this paper we report findings from the ATHENE (Assistive Technologies for Healthy Living in Elders: Needs Assessment by Ethnography) project, which is funded by the Technology Strategy Board under its Assisted Living Innovation Platform programme. The project aims to produce a richer understanding of the lived experiences and needs of older people and explore how ALT stakeholders – suppliers, health and social care providers – can work with users and carers to ‘coproduce’ ALTs. We focus, in particular, on the role of ‘bricolage’ (pragmatic customisation, combining new with legacy devices) by informal carers, such as family members, in enabling ALTs to be personalised to individual needs. Bricolage allows users and family members to take the initiative in ‘coproducing’ ALTs. that making assisted living work relies on collaboration, involving not only formal carers, but also informal ones. We argue that a new research agenda is needed, focusing on solving challenges of involving users and their informal carers in the straightforward and dependable co-production of ALTs

    Supporting the use of user generated content in journalistic practice

    Social media and user-generated content (UGC) are increasingly important features of journalistic work in a number of different ways. However, their use presents major challenges, not least because information posted on social media is not always reliable and therefore its veracity needs to be checked before it can be considered as fit for use in the reporting of news. We report on the results of a series of in-depth ethnographic studies of journalist work practices undertaken as part of the requirements gathering for a prototype of a social media verification ‘dashboard’ and its subsequent evaluation. We conclude with some reflections upon the broader implications of our findings for the design of tools to support journalistic work

    Maintainer perspectives on data-driven transport asset management and the future role of the Internet-of-Things

    In this paper we present fieldwork findings from engagements with a cooperative group of strategic and operations transport maintainers, responsible for the maintenance of drainage infrastructure to mitigate the risk and impact of flooding on the network. Through transport maintainer perspectives from rail and highways sectors, we focus on developing an understanding of work-practices in the context of transport surface-water management, and how the recent acceleration towards ‘data-driven’ technologies in support of maintenance intervention decision-making (i.e. the work of coordinating the cleaning of drainage) is integrated and impacting on current work-practice. Furthermore, we document and consider how maintainers perceive the potential role of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and highlight emerging opportunities and tensions that may arise ahead of its future design and implementation
